What is
Driver Rehabilitation?
Driver rehabilitation is the practice of evaluating a person's driving ability and providing recommendations or training to ensure they and all others are safe on the road.
Why Driver Rehabilitation?
A Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) differs from a driving instructor in that a CDRS has additional training to recognize impairments associated with certain medical diagnoses, how it would affect a person's driving, and is able to recommend strategies or equipment to overcome these limitations. This would include, but not limited to:
-
stroke
-
spinal cord injury
-
vision impairments
-
amputation
-
neuropathy
A CDRS is also able to provide recommendations for high tech and wheelchair accessible vehicles to best fit an individual's needs.
The Process

1
Pre-Driver Evaluation
The pre-driver evaluation is a series of assessments designed to test your basic abilities to operate a vehicle and respond to potential hazards on the road. Paired with a vision report and a doctor's note, the pre-driver evaluation will guide our decision to proceed to the next step.
2
On Road Evaluation
The on road evaluation takes place in the vehicle. The client will be instructed to drive through roadways of increasing difficulty, starting from quiet, local roads to high traffic roads. This is a test of practical ability and safety awareness.
3
Consultation
Based on the results of the pre - driver and on road evaluations, a determination will be made and discussed with you. This can include training with adaptive equipment, additional practice sessions, or discussing alternative solutions to navigating the community.
